last little jugful of Indian summer

The golden Indian summer we were enjoying seems to have been chased off by a fury of wind and rain that is lashing against the window panes as I write. As fast as you can say applecrumblewithcustard we have taken to lighting the woodburner as it turns dark and I am in the market for a new pair of wellies.

Which has all left me woefully unprepared for Jane's monthly flowers-in-the-house shindig. It is just too ghastly to contemplate cutting flowers in the rain and muddy flowerbeds while my sweetpeas and anemones from last week finally hit the compost heap at the weekend.

So my rather paltry offering this time, is the remaining jugful of white cosmos, not looking their perkiest    after four days, but still a poignant little reminder of warmer days in the garden and that gorgeous summer sunshine that has finally said its goodbyes. A last little flowery image of summer....

I'm also sharing this post over at Flower Patch Farmgirl. Do you know her? She writes like a dream.

  1. They are just lovely - even after four days - and I love the white pitcher. Need to find some white vessels for my house! They set off the flowers better than all my glass.

    Hope all is well. xo

  4. Our hostess didn't give us much notice, did she? No excuses are necessary for a little reminder of summer.

  7. I've only ever seen pink cosmos. I love the white ones so much more! Cosmos are always my go-to cut flower. They seem pretty forgiving! I lit the wood burner for the first time yesterday- a treat in contrast to enjoying all that late sunshine!

  23. Hi Belinda, yes I'm not terribly thrilled that the weather has 'flipped' either...although I do enjoy the Autumn colour and an episode or two of snow over christmas...I just don't feel that I had enough sun on my face this year...anyway there is lunch to look forward to next week and meeting you and some other lovely ladies for a chat..can't wait. 24. I'm quite enjoying this gentle run into autumn. There's something about the mild weather we get in early autumn that really lifts my spritis - especially after the odd weather we've had this year!

    Can't wait till Tuesday!
