Today, I stood underneath this one that has reached over the river behind my house for more than a hundred years and marvelled at its magnificence and resilience. The leaves won't be able to hang on for many more days but my eyes are feeding on the year's final wild flourish of colour before it seeps away into a far more monochrome winter landscape.
